Sawyer Gains All-America Honors at Day One of NCAA Swimming Championships

Senior Nina Sawyer (Warrenton, Va. , Liberty) gained All-America status in the 200 yard individual medley to highlight day one action for the University of Mary Washington men's and women's swimming teams at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. The women stand in 25th place after the first day's events.

For the men, freshman Nick Eckhoff (Williamsburg, Va., Jamestown) opened the meet for the Eagles in prelims swimming the 500 yard freestyle, and finished 31st with a time of 4:41.09. In the women's 200 IM, Sawyer seeded herself 15th fvor the finals by swimming 2:06.82 in the morning, and sophomore Megan DeSmit (Bridgewater, Va. , Turner Ashby) finished 42nd with a time of 2:12.56. Sawyer came back in the evening and held her 15th place in the finals with a time of 2:07.47. In the women's 50 yard prelims, Adriana Lesiuk (Bensalem, Pa., Nazareth ) finished 22nd with a time of 24.02. The women's 200 yard medley relay was disqualified in the morning preliminaries.

The Eagles will continue at the NCAA Championships with multiple swimmers competing on Thursday. Prelims start at noon Eastern time, with finals starting at 8:00 p.m.
