The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell to Hampden-Sydney College, 14-7, in the season opener in Farmville, VA. Senior Chris White led the team with three goals, while senior Shane McKenzie tallied one goal and two assists.
UMW got on the board early, as freshman Dyson Adams scored his first career goal just 32 seconds into the game. Hampden-Sydney then scored five straight goals that were unanswered to take a 5-1 lead. UMW poured in 10 shots, seven on goal, in the first quarter but the goalie for the Tigers came up with six saves.
The Eagles began the second quarter as they did in the first, as White scored 1:13 in on an assist from Mike Colgan. UMW continued to put shots on goal, but their goalie came up with four more saves in the second quarter. The Tigers scored two goals in the quarter, one with 8:38 left and the other with 6:41 remaining to take a 7-2 lead into the half.
UMW began the third quarter, the same way they began the other two quarters as White scored a goal from Logan Green just 50 seconds in to put the score at 7-3. Hampden-Sydney responded with a goal and then White tallied his third goal of the game on an assist from, 2018 CAC assist leader, McKenzie with 10:28 to play in the quarter. The Tigers added another goal, but Robert Tata responded with a goal from McKenzie that put the score at 9-5 with 4:45 left. Adams added his second goal of the day with 3:29 left to bring the Eagles within three, 9-6. The Tigers added two goals before the end of the quarter and pushed their lead back to five, 11-6.
Hampden-Sydney began the fourth quarter with the first goal that was with 11:15 on the clock. McKenzie scored a goal on an assist from Tata with 8:03 remaining that put the score at 12-7. From there, the Tigers added two more goals and they held on to win 14-7.
UMW will be bak in action on Saturday as they will travel to Shenandoah for a game at 1 p.m.
