Will Gatens, Robert Tata Named to VaSID College Division Men's Lacrosse All-State Team

LYNCHBURG, VA – Christopher Newport University senior goalkeeper Matt Hayden headlines the 2017 Men's Lacrosse College All-State Team as he was named Player of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).  Jason Rostan of Hampden-Sydney College was named Coach of the Year, while Jason Sarro of Roanoke College took home the Rookie of the Year award.

The McLean, Va. Native had a massive final season for the Captains.  Hayden started all 17 games between the pipes for CNU and proved to be one of the best in the nation.  He posted a goals against average of 8.83 per game and a save percentage of .568.  Those totals were good for fourth and first respectively in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC).  Hayden also finished third in overall saves with 179 on the year.  He led all goalies in the CAC with 41 ground balls and registered the first assist by a goalie in program history, with it coming against Salisbury University.  For his efforts, Hayden was named First-Team All-CAC and a USILA Honorable Mention All-American.

Rostan earns his first Coach of the Year honors in his first season as head coach of the Tigers.  He led the team to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title this year.  It was the first ODAC title for the program since 2001.  Hampden-Sydney earned a bid to the national tournament, where the team defeated Transylvania University.  It was the first NCAA win for the team since 2003 and it gave the Tigers their 16th-overall win.  That set a new program record.  Rostan was named ODAC Coach of the Year and the staff as a whole was named IMLCA All-South Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

Sarro, a freshman from Baltimore, Md., picks up the final major award.  He had a tremendous rookie year with the Maroons.  He found the back of the net 40 times on the year and assisted on 23 more tallies.  Those totals were good for 11th and ninth in the ODAC.  The 63 overall points placed him sixth in the conference.  Sarro earned First-Team All-ODAC and ODAC Rookie of the Year accolades, and was named an Honorable Mention All-American.

The two All-State teams are comprised of 25 athletes from eight institutions: CNU, H-SC, RC, Lynchburg College, Washington and Lee University, the University of Mary Washington, Randolph-Macon College, and the first-ever honoree from Bridgewater College.
