UMW's Charney, Wickersham Named CAC Athletes of the Week
FIELD HOCKEY
Mary Washington senior
midfielder LISA CHARNEY (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) was selected as the
CAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week while York freshman
GK ABBY BAKER (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) was selected as the CAC Field
Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 22, 2012.
Charney is the CAC
Offensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week and third
time this season after scoring the game-winning goals in both UMW
outings this week, which clinched the regular-season CAC title and
top seed in the conference playoffs. She scored the only goal
of the match in a 1-0 OT win over St. Mary’s, then opened the
second-half scoring against Wesley to help the Eagles to a 4-1
victory.
Baker is the CAC
Defensive Player of the Week after recording a pair of CAC shutout
victories and leading the Spartans to earn a home game in the
opening round of the 2012 CAC playoffs. Baker led YCP past
Frostburg State and St. Mary’s with six saves, including
fending off some severe pressure late in the SMC contest.
VOLLEYBALL
Mary Washington junior
hitter KAITLYNN WICKERSHAM (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) and St.
Mary’s senior setter DANI THORNE (Alexandria, Va./T.C.
Williams) were named CAC Volleyball Co-Players of the Week for Oct.
22, 2012.
Wickersham was selected
for weekly honors after leading the Eagles’ victory over
first-place Marymount with 16 kills and 11 digs. She also
added eight kills and 13 digs in Saturday’s Homecoming match
vs. Mary Baldwin.
Thorne shared the
weekly award after contributing 94 assists (5.53 per set) and 33
digs (1.94 per set) and leading the Seahawks to a 4-0 week,
including an important CAC battle vs. York that helped SMC move
into a tie for third place.
