The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to top-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday in Fredericksburg. The Eagles fall to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Sea Gulls started the scoring just six minutes into the game, as Courtney Webster scored, and added two goals in a 1:25 span seven minutes later to carry a 3-0 advantage. The Gulls capped the first half scoring with seven minutes remainingto take a 4-0 lead to halftime.
UMW got on the board with eight minutes left as Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) scored on a Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) assist to close the gap to three.
The Sea Gulls led in shots, 16-8, and the Eagles led in penalty corners, 9-6. Junior Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had 10 saves for the Eagles, while Anna Cooke had five stops for Salisbury.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Christopher Newport University at 4:00 p.m.
