Junior midfielder Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) scored three goals to lead the 12th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-3 victory at Roanoke College on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Va. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the year.
For the fifth straight game, the Eagles fell behind, and for the fifth straight time, UMW bounced back in a large way offensively. Roanoke took the lead seven minutes into play, but the Eagles tied the score with16 minutes remaining in the half on a Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) goal. Charney followed with 15 minutes remaining to give UMW the lead for good, and Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) added another goal just before halftime.
After Roanoke opened the second half with a score, Charney scored twice and senior Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) cored twice to up the advantage to 7-2. The Maroons added a late score to cut the final margin to 7-3.
UMW led in shots, 29-6, and in penalty corners, 16-2. Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had three saves for the Eagles.
Mary Washington will visit Wesley College on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Capital Athletic Conference opener.
