Freshman Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at Stevenson University on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The Eagles jumped ahead early, as junior Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) scored her third goal of the year on a Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) assist 10 minutes into the game. UMW held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Stevenson tied the score as Jorden Haney answered with 20 minutes remaining in the second half. Baker provided the game winner with 3:11 elapsed into overtime.
Mary Washington outshot Stevenson, 16-9, and Stevenson had a 9-8 edge in corners. Senior Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had five saves for the Eagles, who will host St. Mary's College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with second place in the CAC standings on the line.
