Senior forward Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) scored one goal and assisted on another as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Washington (Md.) College, 2-1, on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-5 on the season.
Jones opened the game's scoring, finding the cage on a Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) assist with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The Eagles held the 1-0 lead to halftime.
Washington tied the score at one on a goal by Gabby Tarbert seven minutes into the second half. But freshman Maura Flynn (Ridley Park, Pa., Ridley) scored the game winner on a pass from Jones with exactly 12 minutes left on the clock.
The Eagles outshot Washington, 13-8, and had six penalty corners to 12 for the guests. Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had one save for the Eagles, while Shannon Davis had four for WC.
Mary Washington will visit Christopher Newport University on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
