UMW Baseball Splits Twinbill With PSU-Altoona
The University of Mary Washington baseball team ran its season-opening win streak to nine games by scoring three runs in their final at bat in the opener, 4-3, but fell, 2-0, in the nightcap of their Sunday doubleheader at Dickinson Stadium to move to 9-1 on the season.
In game one, the Eagles trailed 3-0 before scoring once in the fourth. In the bottom of the seventh, Ben Sisk (Chesterfield, Va., Cosby) singled with one out, and freshman Mitchell Herringshaw (Chadron, Ohio, Notre Dame Latin) followed with a pinch-hit single. Pinch runner Jeff Zeisler (Norfolk, Va., Granby) scored on a Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) single, and Beattie Southerland (Purcellville, Va., Loudoun Valley) followed with a hit to plate Herringshaw. After a groundout and a walk to Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va., Colonial Beach) to load the bases, Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) walked to score Sixsmith with the winning run.
Sophomore Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va., Paul VI) earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings of perfect relief with four strikeouts. Sixsmith and Steffey led the Eagles with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, the Eagles totalled just four hits, as Sixsmith, Eric Rehbein, Jeff Rezach and Sisk collecting safeties. Junior Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in four innings of work.
The Eagles will return to action on Friday when they host Gettysburg College at 3:00 p.m.
