Wright's Four Hits Leads UMW Baseball Past Cazenovia, 8-7

Senior left fielder Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) singled twice, doubled, and homered to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Cazenovia College on Thursday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 7-2 on the season.

The Eagles jumped on the scoreboard with one run in the first when Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) singled and scored on Wright's double. Cazenovia scored three runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage. The Eagles tied the score in the bottom of the inning, as Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage) singled and moved to third on Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha)'s first double of the day. Graham Manning (Narragansett, R.I., Prout) provided an RBI groundout before Nick Espinosa (Arnold, Md., Broadneck) singled home Rosanova.

Cazenovia regained the lead at 4-3 in the fifth before Wright hit a solo homer to left-centerfield to re-tie the score at four in the bottom of the frame. UMW plated two runs to take the lead for good in the sixth, as Howell singled to left field and advanced to third on a Rosanova double to right field. Espinosa singled to right field, scoring Rosanova and Howell.

The Eagles added two runs in the seventh. Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) walked and moved to second on a Wright single to left. Howell singled to center field, plating Bergen; Wright advanced to third and scored on an error by the center fielder on the play.

Cazenovia rallied in the ninth, scoring a pair of runs, but UMW's Eric Rehbein recorded the save giving the win to freshman Matt Abramson (Malvern, Pa., Conestoga), who improves to 3-0 on the year. Abramson allowed four earned runs in 6.1 innings, with four walks and three strikeouts. Rehbein allowed one unearned run in two-thirds of an inning in gaining his first save of the year.

Mary Washington will visit Salisbury University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
