UMW Men's Basketball Tops Stevenson, 85-79, in CAC Action

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Senior center Brandon Altmann (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored 24 points to lead four University of Mary Washington players in double figures as the Eagles topped Stevenson University, 85-79, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 4-6 in CAC play, and 7-11 overall.

Mary Washington trailed, 36-34, at halftime, as Stevenson shot a blistering 56% from the floor in the first half. The Eagles outscored the Mustangs, 51-43, in the second half, shooting 61% from the floor while limiting the guests to 42%. The Eagles grabbed the lead quickly in the second frame, and for the majority of the half.

In addition to Altmann's 24 points on 9-11 shooting from the floor and 6-8 from the line, junior guard Qaiser Ahmed (Falls Church, Va., George C. Marshall) scored 19 points on 5-5 shooting from the field and 9-12 free throws, and senior forward Eric Rolander (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) added 17 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Rocky Ullah (Stafford, Va., Brooke Point) scored 14 points including three three-pointers.

For the game, UMW shot 57% (28-49), including four three pointers, and made 25-35 free throws. Stevenson shot 48% with nine trys and made 12-17 foul shots. Each team had 30 rebounds, and UMW committed 17 turnovers to 16 for the Mustangs.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host St. Mary's College at 3:00 p.m.
