SALISBURY, MD - Sophomore guard
Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) scored 18 points, and sophomore center
Lauren Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) added 12 points in leading the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 72-40 victory at Salisbury University on Monday night in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles, who rank third in NCAA Division III points allowed per game, improve to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in CAC play.
UMW jumped ahead early, scoring the first eight points of the game, including five points from McRae and a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison). A McRae layup with 14:05 to play gave the Eagles a 16-5 advantage, and made another run to lead, 34-16, with 2:04 to go. UMW led, 38-21, at halftime.
The second half saw the Eagles up the lead to 26 at 52-26 with 13:26 left in the game, and held the elad to at least 24 for the remainder of the game. The Eagles shot 42 percent from the floor for the game (28-66) including four three pointers, and made 12-15 free throws. Salisbury shot 26% without a three pointer, and went 6-14 from the charity stripe. The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 50-42, and forced 17 Salisbury turnovers via 10 steals. UMW also blocked seven shots in the game.
In addition to McRae's 18 points on 7-14 shooting, Kornacki added 12 points on 5-8 shooting. Freshman
Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) had 13 rebounds and four blocks to go with her six points, and Wimmer added nine points and eight rebounds. All 12 UMW players scored in the game. Salisbury was led by Janay Johnson's 11 points.
Mary Washington will host York College of Pa. on Wednesday in another Capital Athletic Conference contest starting at 6:00 p.m.
