UMW Softball Closes Regular Season with CAC Sweep of Stevenson, 14-1 and 2-1

The University of Mary Washington softball team saw its senior class play its final home doubleheader on Friday, and each member of the class played a key role as the Eagles topped Stevenson University, 14-1, and 2-1. The Eagles will host a game in the CAC Tournament, either on Tuesday or Thursday of next week.
In the opener, the Eagles scored 10 first inning runs en route to the 14-1 win. Freshman Elizabeth Crowe went 3-4 with a two run homer and a grand slam and seven RBI to elad the way, while senior outfielder Julianne Sudduth went 3-3 with a run and two RBI. Junior Kaitlin Petrella went 4-4 with a double and two runs scored, and freshman 2B Monique DeZarn was 3-3 with a run.
Senior Kirsten Rowell added to her school record for victories with her 49th career win, and 17th of 2009, allowing three hits in five innings, with no walks and six strikeouts.
In game two, the Eagles scored twice in the third inning, with senior Cathy Hull, the school's all-time leader in hits, plating the winning run. Senior Nicole Foster got the win for UMW, with Rowell earning the save. Rowell struck out six in relief. Offrensively, Petrella had a pair of singles and junior catcher Kim Olinger added a pair of doubles.
Mary Washington will host a Capital Athletic Conference tournament game on either Tuesday or Thursday, pending the York/Salisbury results on Saturday. UMW closes the regular season with a 23-14 record.
