Rowell Paces UMW Softball Past York in CAC Tourney, 3-0

Senior pitcher Kirsten Rowell allowed just two hits and struck out 10 batters to lead the University of Mary Washington softball team to a 3-0 victory over York College in the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Friday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 24-14-1 on the season.
UMW scored one run in the third inning, as Monique DeZarn singled, Cathy Hull doubled, and DeZarn scored on a Morgan Lamon RBI groundout. The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth, as Lamon singled and scored on Elizabeth Crowe's RBI double. After Kaitlin Petrella reached on a fielder's choice, Amanda Adams singled, sending Petrella to third. Kim Olinger singled to plate Petrella.
Hull and Adams led UMW with two hits apiece, while Lamon, Crowe, and Olinger provided RBIs. Rowell improved to 18-5 with the shutout, allowing just the two hits, and faced two batters over the minimum.
The Eagles will visit Salisbury University, the host of the weekend portion of the tournament, to face the Sea Gulls in the winners' bracket on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
