UMW Men's Basketball Tops Greensboro, 72-65

GREENSBORO, NC - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team saw four different players each sink a pair of free throws in the final 52 seconds in defeating Greensboro College, 72-65, on Sunday in Greensboro. The Eagles, who improve to 4-4 on the season, saw three players in double figures, led by senior center Brandon Altmann (Vienna, Va., James Madison)'s 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first half, leading by as many as 11 points in the opening stanza, before the Pride came back to cut the halftime deficit to three at 34-31 at intermission. The Eagles maintained their lead until 8:18 remaining in the game, when Greensboro took its first lead of the game, at 52-51. With the score tied at 55, junior guard Qaiser Ahmed (Falls Church, Va., George C. Marshall) hit a big three pointer to give UMW the lead for good.

With the Eagles leading by one, 64-63, with 52 seconds left, Eric Rolander, Ryan Farrar, Rocky Ullah, and Sam Groseclose each sank two free throw attempts, and Greensboro commited two turnovers to seal the game.

In addition to Altmann's 18 points and 11 rebounds, Groseclose (Bridgewater, Va., Turner Ashby) scored 12 points and Tad Dickman (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) added 11 points for the Eagles. Greensboro was led by Adam Powell's 16. UMW shot 49% from the floor (23-47), including six of 17 three pointers, while Greensboro shot just 39%. The Eagles outrebounded the Pride, 34-31.

Mary Washington will return to action on January 2 when they visit Johns Hopkins University in their holiday tournament at 3:00 p.m.
