As we near the end of our second annual Ten for Ten Challenge, we want to say a huge thank you to all of the student-athletes and coaches who have participated so far and made this such a success! We are consistently impressed with the dedication, passion, and generosity that our student-athletes exhibit on and off the field. UMW would not be what it is today without the support of our students, alumni, parents, and friends. If you haven't given back yet – there's still time! Ten for Ten will be going strong until midnight on October 10.
In the meantime, we hope you'll enjoy the third and final Spotlight Story about young alum and former lacrosse star, Ashlyn Dacey '16.
Tell us a bit about your life right now. Where are you living; what are you focusing on?
I'm currently working and living in Northern Virginia. Right now my primary focus is on my career, given that I've only been working for a little over a year now, I think this is a really important time to focus on developing the skills necessary for growth within my role and taking my career to where I want it to go.
What is your favorite memory from your time as an athlete at UMW?
It's so hard to settle on just one, but if I had to pick it would be playing in the NCAA tournament my senior year. Making it to NCAA's was something that our team had been working so hard for and the fact that we had the opportunity to participate in not only an NCAA Tournament game on our home turf but also in the Sweet Sixteen that season was pretty incredible.
For many young alumni, giving back is not at the top of their minds. What inspired you to do so?
I'm so grateful for the experiences I had while I was a student athlete at UMW….the opportunities we have as collegiate athletes and the memories you make with your team are priceless. So for everything UMW Athletics gave me during my four years, I thought the least I could do as an alum is give back. I want the teammates I had that are still on the current team and the future players of the UMW Women's Lacrosse Team to have the best possible experience they can while they're playing for UMW.
Did any experience in particular demonstrate to you the importance of supporting your athletic program, and UMW as a whole?
One of the things that stands out to me as demonstrating the importance of supporting your athletic program was when an alum had donated to our program before the 2015 season so that we could get new uniforms. The generosity that she showed to our team really struck me, and I thought to myself, "She's setting such a great example and showing us how important giving back to your team is, and I hope that I too can continue to support this team once I graduate."
If you were speaking to a group of current Eagles, what would you tell them about the Eagle Club?
How important it is to donate! Even if everyone just donates a little bit, that adds up and can do a lot for your team!
