YORK, Pa – The Capital Athletic Conference announced that a record 1,499 student-athletes were named to the 2016-17 All-Academic Team, an average of nearly 150 student-athletes per full member institution.
The 1,499 honorees marks the sixth time in CAC history that over 1,000 student-athletes have earned All-Academic recognition. The 2016-17 school year marked the fourth full year of membership for Christopher Newport University, Penn State Harrisburg, and Southern Virginia University. Additionally, New Jersey City University concluded its fourth year as an associate member in men's golf.
Student-athletes in one or more CAC championship sports that attain a 3.20 grade point average (GPA) for the academic year earn a spot on the All-Academic team. A total of 46.2% of CAC student-athletes posted a 3.20 GPA this year (1,499 of 3,245).
Nine schools had at least 100 student-athletes on the CAC All-Academic team, including a CAC-leading 253 honorees from York. Salisbury finished in second with 198 honorees followed by Mary Washington (174), Christopher Newport (163), Frostburg State (148), St. Mary's (145), Southern Virginia (121), Penn State Harrisburg (113), and Marymount (110).
For the second straight year, York recorded the highest percentage of student-athletes on the list at 59.9% St. Mary's also placed over half of their student-athletes on the team at 55.7%. Eight CAC full member institutions placed more than 40% of their student-athletes on the All-Academic team.
