The University of Mary Washington athletic department unveiled a new student-athlete lounge in Goolrick Gymnasium at a ceremony led by Director of Athletics Ken Tyler on Tuesday afternoon. The room will be used exclusively by UMW student-athletes and athletic staff.
"We are excited to open this fully renovated space to our student-athletes", said Tyler at a brief ceremony with ribbon cutting. "Renovating this space for you, the student-athletes, to utilize before practice or between classes and relax, watch TV, study, and have a snack, is only the beginning. It's going to be a great ride as we move forward and do things in a first class manner as we strive to attain our goal of being one of the top NCAA Division III programs in the nation."
The room, formerly used for storage, now boasts a large flat screen television, couches, a study table and bistro table. The area also now houses a fully remodeled kitchen, with refridgerator, microwave oven and sink. Funding for the room was provided through contributions from UMW Athletics' corporate partners.
The room will be open weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and during other hours by appointment.
