UMW Athletics Provides Christmas Presents and Aid for 25 Underpriviledged Familes
For the ninth consecutive year, the University of Mary Washington athletic department has had the opportunity to help disadvantaged families in the Fredericksburg area during the holiday season, assisting this year with family needs and Santa wishes for 25 families of students at Hugh Mercer Elelementary School.
With the assistance of Denae Overton, the guidance counselor at Hugh Mercer, the UMW Student Athlete Advisory Council contacted all UMW athletes and coaches, and collections were taken for the needy families. Coaches and athletes shopped for family needs and Santa wishes for the children, and were able to provide for 25 families.
"I am glad that our student-athletes can help those in need at the holidays, and realize that there are those in the world worse off than them", said UMW Associate Athletic Director Dana Hall, who heads the SAAC initiative each year.
“Giving back to our community, particularly those less fortunate than we are, is an important part of our athletic program", said UMW Athletic Director Ken Tyler. "I’m very proud of our student-athletes for giving their time and money to brighten the holiday season for some very deserving children. The Eagles have demonstrated once again that they are winners on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the community.”
